Dr. Maria B. Schiavone, a gynecologic oncologist, specializes in the diagnosis, medical/surgical treatment and lifelong medical care of women with benign and malignant conditions of the cervix, uterus, ovaries, vagina and vulva, as well as related malignancies of the upper abdomen, pelvic area and colorectal region. She has expertise in complex laparoscopic, robotic and open surgery; advanced chemotherapy and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC); targeted and hormonal therapies; and oral PARP inhibitors that enhance the effectiveness of chemotherapy.
At Holy Name, Dr. Schiavone introduced the use of sentinel lymph node mapping to stage cervical, endometrial and vulvar cancers. This procedure aims to increase the precision in the detection of metastatic disease, with the goal to reduce morbidity associated with full lymphadenectomy during surgical staging. Dr. Schiavone works closely with Holy Name's radiation oncologists in the use of brachytherapy and external beam radiation to treat gynecologic cancers.
Dr. Schiavone has presented her research, focused on sentinel lymph node mapping, the reduction of surgical site infections, and robotic surgery for gynecologic malignancies both nationally and internationally and is widely published, including in respected peer-reviewed journals such as Annals of Surgical Oncology and Gynecologic Oncology. Her practice offers opportunities to participate in large cooperative trials, some of which Dr. Schiavone is either the principal investigator (PI) or sub-PI.
Dr. Schiavone develops special relationships with her patients as she guides them through the entire care process from diagnosis, treatment and surveillance. She is honored to take care of her patients and help them navigate their sexual health and femininity in an intimate and friendly environment. She is passionate about advancing women's health, reducing disparities in health care access and improving quality of life among underserved populations. Dr. Schiavone is fluent in Spanish.
