As summer begins and people start to gather for vacations, events, and travel, COVID is regaining attention due to a slight uptick in cases with a new variant. Dr. Suraj Saggar, Chief of Infectious Disease at Holy Name, emphasizes that while this variant does not appear to cause more severe illness than previous variants, the disease still spreads easily from person to person.

“We’ve seen many variants emerge since the start of the pandemic, and this serves as a good reminder to take the same steps we recommend during cold and flu season to stay healthy,” says Dr. Saggar.

Friendly reminders:

  • If you haven’t received the latest COVID booster and are eligible, talk about it with your doctor. Updated vaccines are still expected to offer strong protection against the new variant.
  • Practice good hygiene. Frequent handwashing and avoiding close contact with others when sick remain effective ways to reduce transmission.
  • Test if you have symptoms. Fevers, cough, fatigue, and loss of smell or taste are still common signs of infection.

“We’ve learned a lot over the past few years,” says Dr. Saggar. “And those lessons still apply—vaccination, testing, and awareness continue to be our best tools.”
