Fibroids are benign tumors that develop in the uterus and are a concern for many women. Despite their prevalence, many women may not be aware that they have fibroids; however, the impact they have on women's health can be significant.

Fibroids can cause various symptoms, including heavy or painful menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain or pressure, painful sex, frequent urination, and difficulty emptying the bladder. Women with these symptoms should schedule an appointment with a gynecologist. The doctor will review the woman's medical history, perform a physical exam, and may order diagnostic tests such as an ultrasound, MRI, or CT scan.

“Once fibroids are confirmed, the next step is to discuss treatment options with your provider,” says gynecologist Dr. Jason Kanos, Chairman of OB/GYN at Holy Name. “These may include medication to manage symptoms, a minimally invasive procedure to shrink fibroids, or surgery to remove them.”

“Open communication with a gynecologist is essential for having the best possible outcome,” Dr. Kanos adds. “After initiating treatment, women should schedule regular follow-up appointments to monitor their condition and adjust the treatment plan as needed.”

Left untreated, fibroids can significantly impact quality of life, including physical, emotional, and social well-being. Fibroids can also interfere with fertility by affecting the uterus's shape or blocking the fallopian tubes. In some cases, fibroids can lead to complications such as anemia due to heavy bleeding or urinary tract infections. Identifying and addressing fibroids promptly can alleviate symptoms and help prevent these complications from occurring or worsening.

In addition to medical treatments, women can adopt lifestyle modifications to help manage fibroid symptoms. These may include maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, managing stress, and avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption.

Understanding fibroids and taking proactive steps to address them is essential for every woman's health and well-being. By recognizing symptoms, seeking medical attention, and exploring appropriate treatment options, women can effectively manage fibroids and improve their overall quality of life.
