Strokes and cardiovascular events are life-threatening emergencies that require immediate attention. At Holy Name, patients receive timely, expert, and compassionate care backed by the latest scientific guidelines, making it a hospital you can trust when it matters most.

Holy Name’s designated Stroke Center was one of the first in New Jersey to receive Primary Stroke Care Certification from The Joint Commission in recognition of our excellence in care. From the moment Holy Name EMS arrives, the stroke team is already preparing to act. As the ambulance heads to our emergency department (ED), the EMS team alerts the hospital of a possible stroke. Together, with the patient and their loved ones, the EMS team works quickly to determine the “last known well” time which helps guide treatment decisions. At the hospital, the patient receives a head CT scan to check for any bleeding in the brain. If no bleeding is seen a stroke specialist evaluates the patient, reviews their symptoms and determines if clot-busting medication is the right option. The ED team also performs advanced imaging to see if there is a large blockage in the head or neck that might require a separate procedure to remove. Within 24 hours, the patient is seen by our expert neurology team and closely monitored with frequent neurological checks. We also continue imaging and testing to understand the cause of the stroke.

“Heart and stroke emergencies require rapid, coordinated care, and Holy Name has built a system that delivers exactly that,” said Dr. Thomas Kreibich, a board-certified neurologist at Holy Name. “From diagnosis to recovery, we combine expertise with compassion to give our patients the best chance at long-term health.”

When it comes to medical emergencies, every second counts—and so does the quality of care. That’s why we’re proud to share that Holy Name has earned two top honors from the American Heart Association. We received the Gold Plus Award for stroke care, recognizing our team’s commitment to using the latest, proven treatments that give patients the best chance at recovery. We also earned the Gold Award for resuscitation excellence, highlighting our success in saving lives during in-hospital cardiac arrests by following the most up-to-date emergency care guidelines.

These awards mean that if you or a loved one experiences a stroke or cardiac arrest at Holy Name, you're getting care that meets the highest national standards. Our team is trained to act fast, follow proven guidelines, and use the latest research to save lives and improve recovery. These national awards show that when it matters most, you can count on Holy Name for expert, compassionate care.

“With advanced diagnostic tools and a team committed to evidence-based care, we’re able to respond quickly and effectively - often making the difference between survival and lasting quality of life,” said Dr. David Wild, a board-certified cardiologist and the Director of Echocardiography and Cardiac Rehabilitation at Holy Name.
