Holy Name Medical Center Achieves Magnet® Recognition Again for Commitment to Nursing Excellence

One of only 29 hospitals in the state and among just 6 % nationwide to achieve designation

September 25, 2019

Holy Name Medical Center today announced it has, once again, received the prestigious Magnet® Recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Magnet is the highest, most respected distinction for nursing excellence and quality patient care, with only 6% of healthcare organizations nationwide achieving recognition.

Holy Name Medical Center Achieves Magnet Recognition

Holy Name is one of just 29 hospitals in New Jersey to earn the designation and one of very few to receive Magnet Exemplars® – or best practices – for exemplary nursing professional practice in two areas: community home care and Holy Name's freestanding residential hospice facility, Villa Marie Claire.

"Earning this credential for the third consecutive time is a tremendous honor and validates our commitment and dedication to our community," said Sheryl Slonim, DNP, RN–BC, NEA–BC, APN–C, chief nursing officer and executive vice president of Patient Care Services at Holy Name. "We are especially proud of the exemplars, which highlight the extraordinary efforts of our nurses, who champion the health and wellness of our patients every single day. This is one of the many reasons why this place is different."

The American Nurses Credentialing Center's Magnet Recognition Program ® distinguishes health care organizations that meet rigorous standards for nursing excellence. Research demonstrates that Magnet recognition provides specific benefits to health care organizations and their communities, such as:

  • Higher patient satisfaction with nurse communication, availability of help and receipt of discharge information.
  • Lower risk of 30–day mortality and lower failure to rescue rates.
  • Higher job satisfaction among nurses.
  • Lower nurse reports of intentions to leave their positions.
The Magnet Model provides a framework for nursing practice, research, and measurement of outcomes. Through this framework, ANCC evaluates applicants across a number of components and dimensions to gauge an organization's nursing excellence.

The foundation of this model comprises various elements deemed essential to delivering superior patient care. These include the quality of nursing leadership and coordination and collaboration across specialties, as well as processes for measuring and improving the quality and delivery of care.

Health care organizations must reapply for Magnet recognition every four years based on adherence to Magnet concepts and demonstrated improvements in patient care and quality. An organization reapplying for Magnet recognition must provide documented evidence to demonstrate how staff members sustained and improved Magnet concepts, performance and quality over the four-year period since the organization received its most recent recognition.
