The Korean Medical Program (KMP) of Holy Name Medical Center has received a $20,000 grant from the TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, America's Most Convenient Bank®. The monies will help to underwrite costs associated with the KMP's medical and community outreach programs.
The KMP's mission is to provide the Korean-American population in the New York/New Jersey metro area with culturally and linguistically-sensitive medical care and customer service, and to raise awareness of the importance of prevention, screening and early detection of medical conditions prevalent in this community. The majority of the KMP's patients are first-generation immigrants, and uninsured/underinsured families.
"The Korean Medical Program of Holy Name Medical Center plays a significant role in sustaining a vibrant and thriving community," said Don Buckley, Market President for TD Bank. "We are pleased to support Holy Name's ongoing community-based efforts and look forward to its continued success."
Having recently celebrated its fifth anniversary with Holy Name, the Program has shown itself to be an important community asset. With the number of annual medical visits to the hospital and two satellite locations (Closter and Englewood Cliffs) having grown to 40,000, a 90 percent increase over the program's first year, the KMP has become the "go-to" healthcare resource for many Korean-Americans in our region.
Through the efforts of a dedicated team of 80 Korean American physicians and philanthropic donors such as the TD Charitable Foundation, the KMP is able to provide free blood screenings, vaccinations, treatments, surgeries, and counseling sessions to 10,000 people annually through its six major community outreach programs: "Walk for Mom" Breast Cancer Campaign, Asian Liver Center/Hepatitis B Campaign, Diabetes Campaign, Mental Health Program, Annual Health Festival, and "Healthy You" lifestyle modification program.
"Since we brought the KMP to Holy Name, we have focused on creating and customizing initiatives to our community's needs," says Kyung Hee Choi, Vice President, Korean Medical Program. "In the coming years, our emphasis will be on solidifying and broadening our reach so that more people will be able to benefit from these valuable services. The generous grant from the TD Charitable Foundation will help considerably in our efforts to advance cultural inclusion, eliminate health disparities and serve those in need."
The KMP recently received the "2013 Healthcare Heroes" award from NJBIZ magazine in the category of Education Hero Organization. The Program was selected from over 20 healthcare organizations in the state.
