James Lee, MD, recently performed the first robotic thyroidectomy in Northern New Jersey at Holy Name Medical Center using the da Vinci® Si HD™ Surgical System. The procedure was successfully performed on a 44-year-old female patient. The patient was discharged 24 hours after surgery.
"By using a minimally invasive procedure to remove the thyroid we are able to offer great benefits to patients with minimal risks," explains Dr. Lee. "One of the main differences in a robotic thyroidectomy is that the incision is made under the patient's arm versus the typical incision for a surgical procedure which leaves a scar on the front of the neck."
"Holy Name Medical Center continues to remain at the forefront of state-of-the-art surgical services," explains Hee Yang, MD, medical director of Holy Name's Minimally Invasive Center. "Dr. Lee's performing the first robotic thyroidectomy in Northern New Jersey has paved the way for the latest minimally invasive treatment options for patients."
There are many benefits to minimally invasive surgical procedures such as those using the da Vinci robotsmaller incisions, less surgical preparation, shorter hospital stays, and a faster return to normal activities.
