Study Places Holy Name Hospital In Nation's Top 10% For Stroke Care

October 29, 2009

Teaneck, NJ - A study issued today by HealthGrades, the leading independent healthcare ratings organization, finds that Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck, NJ is among the top 10 percent in the nation for stroke care. The HealthGrades 12th annual "Hospital Quality in America" study, the largest annual report of its kind, analyzed close to 40 million Medicare hospitalization records from 2006, 2007 and 2008 from the country's nearly 5,000 nonfederal hospitals.

As a result, Holy Name received the 2010 HealthGrades Stroke Care Excellence Award™. The Hospital's other 2010 Clinical Achievements include:

  • Five-Star Rating for Treatment of Heart Attack
  • Five-Star Rating for Treatment of Heart Failure
  • Five-Star Rating for Hip Fracture Repair
  • Ranking Among the Top 10 percent in NJ for Treatment of Stroke
  • Five-Star Rating for Treatment of Stroke
  • Five-Star Rating for Treatment of Pneumonia
  • Five-Star Rating for Treatment of Sepsis

According to the HealthGrades evaluation system, hospitals receiving a 5-star rating have mortality or complication rates that are below the national average, to a statistically significant degree.

"We are truly honored to be recognized for outstanding clinical outcomes in so many specialty areas," says Michael Maron, President/CEO, Holy Name Hospital. "That the study uses objective data gives consumers the confidence they need to make sound healthcare decisions for themselves and their families. At Holy Name, we engage in a continuing process of performance evaluation and improvement. The focus here is on quality care and patient satisfaction; it's the reason we come to work every day. And it's the skill and dedication of our entire teamphysicians, nurses, and allied health professionalsthat make these five-star ratings possible."

HealthGrades rates hospitals independently, based on data the facilities submit to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. No hospital can opt in or out of being rated, and no hospital pays to be rated. Because the risk profiles of patient populations at hospitals are not alike, HealthGrades risk-adjusts the data to allow for "apples-to-apples" comparisons.
