Atrial fibrillation (AF or afib) is the most common abnormal heart rhythm, found in about 2.2 million Americans and involves the two upper chambers of the heart. The likelihood of developing afib increases with age, occurring in three to five percent of people over 65. It is often asymptomatic, and is not in itself generally life-threatening, but may result in palpitations, fainting, chest pain, or congestive heart failure. People with AF usually have a significantly increased risk of stroke (up to 7 times that of the general population). Todays talk will discuss risk factors, early signs and symptoms, treatment options, and means of coping with chronic afib.
