Holy Name Medical Center's Hispanic Outreach Program

April 8, 2010

Teaneck, NJ- The Hispanic Outreach Program at Holy Name Medical Center has launched a fundraising initiative, Walk for Hope, a walkathon designed to promote cancer prevention awareness to Hispanic men and women. The walk will take place on May 22 at James Braddock Park in North Bergen, NJ.  Walkers are encouraged to join the cause, and sponsorship opportunities are available at various levels.

The mission of the "Walk for Hope" Campaign, in partnership with the Celia Cruz Foundation, is to provide education to the Hispanic community by identifying common health risks such as breast cancer, prostate cancer and colon cancer by providing early detection screenings as well as preventing illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. The walk has adopted a goal of generating funds to facilitate breast and prostate cancer screening for underserved members of the community and provide referrals to specialty physicians.

Celia Cruz, one of the most accomplished and revered singers in history, founded the Celia Cruz Foundation. During her music career, she became an advocate for education and health issues in the Hispanic community. After loosing her life to cancer in 2003, the foundation carries on her legacy by raising funds for the fight against cancer.

The Hispanic Outreach Program at Holy Name Medical Center was established to create awareness of Holy Name's commitment to assuring the highest level of healthcare to members of the Hispanic community and, consistent with the Medical Center's ministry of healing, to provide services and programs in a culturally sensitive and caring environment.
