Holy Name Medical Center Hosting Breast Cancer Awareness Walkathon

Proceeds Will Fund 100 Mammogram Screenings

Holy Name Medical Center is hosting its 10th annual Walk for Mom breast cancer awareness walkathon on June 3, starting at 9:30 a.m. The walk, which will commence and end at the hospital following sidewalks circling the campus, is focused on raising awareness of the benefits of early detection and raise funds to provide 100 free screening mammograms.

"A large part of our focus here at Holy Name is educating and helping members of our community get the preventive care they need," said Michael Maron, President and CEO. "Our annual walkathon is a very inspiring way to get word out to women who may not be aware of the importance of mammography and its effectiveness in finding breast cancer in its early stages."

Holy Name first started the walkathon through its Korean Medical Program after physicians were seeing a high incidence of advanced breast cancer in young women. Since then, the Medical Center has expanded the event to include all populations. To date, more than 900 women have had free mammogram screenings, funded through the Walk for Mom campaign.

"Our efforts have been very successful in reaching the Korean and other Asian communities in educating them and providing mammograms for women who otherwise would not have had the screening," said Kyung Hee Choi, Vice President of Asian Health Services. "Now it's time to expand this endeavor to all communities within the Holy Name service area."
