Hispanic Outreach Program holds Inaugural Walk in North Bergen

June 2, 2010

Teaneck,  NJ - Holy Name Medical Center's Hispanic Outreach Program, held its 1st Annual Walk for Hope on May 22, in James Broddock Park located in North Bergen, NJ. Led by Emmy Award-winning Journalist Geraldo Rivera, walkers raised funds to facilitate breast and prostate cancer screenings for the underserved members of the Hispanic community.

"I am thrilled with the participation from Bergen and Hudson counties" says Dr. Henry Fernandez-Cos, Medical Director, Holy Name Medical Center's Hispanic Outreach Program, who noted that about 400 people participated in the walk-a-thon which was held in partnership with the Celia Cruz Foundation. "Our program is designed to encourage and provide education on primary prevention to the Hispanic community."

The walk-a-thon event featured consultations with bilingual doctors, complimentary blood pressure screenings and cancer education. The American Cancer Society, NJ Family Care and other organizations participated in the event by distributing educational material. Student volunteers from Our Lady of Grace School Youth Group in Fairview and student volunteers from Memorial High School MOM's (Memorial Outreach Movement) in West New York, assisted with the walk.

The Hispanic Outreach Program at Holy Name Medical Center was established to create awareness of Holy Name's commitment to assuring the highest level of healthcare to members of the Hispanic community and, consistent with the Medical Center's ministry of healing, to provide services and programs in a culturally sensitive and caring environment.
