Holy Name Medical Center's Hispanic Outreach Program Holds First Anniversary Celebration

October 28, 2010

Teaneck, NJ - Holy Name Medical Center's Hispanic Outreach Program celebrated its first anniversary on October 20 with a cocktail reception in the Medical Center's Marian Hall, featuring special guest, Armando Correa, editor-in-chief of People en Espanol. During the event, Yadyra Rivera, MD, hematologist/oncologist, was honored for the skilled, compassionate care she has rendered to the Hispanic community over the course of her medical career.

"Our program is designed to encourage and provide education about the importance primary care plays in the prevention of disease and illness," said Henry Fernandez-Cos, MD, Medical Director of the Hispanic Outreach Program. "Through initiatives such as our Walk for Hope and health fairs, we have provided free breast and prostate screenings to over many Hispanic women and men."

Dr. Fernandez-Cos acknowledged Silverio Vega, Mayor of West New York; Father Peter Sticco, Our Lady of Grace School; Filomena Ranaudo, Vice Principal, Our Lady of Grace School; Sue Colacurcio, Teacher, Memorial Outreach Program; and Lourdes Verea, The Rebeka Foundation, for their outstanding leadership and support.

Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle presented two proclamations to Dr. Fernandez-Cos. The first celebrated the Hispanic Outreach Program's anniversary and the second, from NJ State legislators, was in observance of Hispanic Heritage Month.

The Hispanic Outreach Program at Holy Name Medical Center was established to create awareness of Holy Name's commitment to assuring the highest level of health care to members of the Hispanic community and, consistent with the Medical Center's ministry of healing, to provide services and programs in a culturally sensitive and caring environment.
