The American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer has granted three-year accreditation with commendation to the Regional Cancer Center at Holy Name Medical Center (HNMC).
The American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer (CoC) is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival rates and quality of life for cancer patients. There are currently more than 1500 CoC-accredited cancer programs in the United States and Puerto Rico, representing almost 30 percent of all hospitals; this 30 percent diagnoses and/or treats approximately 80 percent of all newly diagnosed cancer patients each year.
Accreditation by the CoC is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality cancer care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. Receiving care at a CoC-accredited cancer program ensures that a patient will have access to comprehensive care, including a range of state-of the-art services and equipment; a multi-specialty, team approach to coordinate the best treatment options; information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options; access to cancer-related information, education and support; a cancer registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results and offers lifelong patient follow-up; ongoing monitoring and improvement of care; and perhaps, most important - quality care close to home.
According to Marylou Anton, MSN, RN, OCN, Executive Director of Oncology Services at HNMC, this accreditation is a "significant accomplishment for the Regional Cancer Center, and it demonstrates to our patients that they are receiving world-class care in a community environment."
The HNMC Regional Cancer Center is also accredited by the American College of Radiology and the American Society for Radiation Oncology and works in partnership with Sharsheret, the organization supporting young women and their families of all Jewish backgrounds facing breast cancer, as well as Gilda's Club and the American Cancer Society.
