Nurses, physicians, administrators, and other staff members at Holy Name Medical Center recently celebrated the hospital's Magnet® redesignation, a recognition shared by six percent of hospitals nationwide. Magnet status is granted by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) after a meticulous review process.
Hundreds of employees enjoyed a buffet of hors d'oeuvres, entrees, and desserts, made available around the clock at the Medical Center so staff members from all three shifts could participate.
"Our core nursing values at Holy Name include a statement about celebrating our accomplishments," said Sheryl Slonim, DNP, RN-BC, NEA-BC, Executive Vice President of Patient Services and Chief Nursing Officer. "The achievement of Magnet status traverses the entire medical center community - everyone supports this culture of excellence."
Magnet status, one of the highest levels of recognition a hospital can achieve, is a four-year designation. It shows that the hospital provides a culture of safety, quality care, excellent patient outcomes, and innovative practices while retaining top-notch staff and maintaining high job satisfaction among nurses. Only about 400 hospitals nationwide have received the designation.
"What you have to do for Magnet status is have a culture of excellence in place," said Lori Perlstein, DNP, RN-BC, NEA-BC, Director of Professional Practice. It must be imbedded in the organization at all times - you have to live it, breathe it. Excellence isn't something you just decide to talk about when you submit an application. It permeates the organization every day."
