Holy Name Medical Center Broadcasts Live Cases for Liepzig Interventional Conference

January 29, 2015

Holy Name Medical Center (HNMC) was one of only 11 medical centers worldwide and the only U.S. site selected to present at the Leipzig Interventional Course (LINC), a global conference where participants performed interventional procedures that were streamed live to thousands of attendees in 70 countries. LINC, a comprehensive course designed to allow discussions of vascular patients by colleagues of different specialties, was held on January 27 – 30, 2015. Holy Name's segment was broadcast on January 28.

The staff at Holy Name Medical Center's Interventional Institute, which includes John Rundback, MD, Kevin Herman, MD and Amish Patel, MD performed endovascular interventions, a method of accessing parts of the body via blood vessels using minimally invasive procedures. The course was created to enhance education and foster collaboration on a global platform and promote the understanding and development of endovascular therapies.

The Interventional Institute at HNMC, under the direction of John Rundback, MD, FAHA, FSVM, FSIR, Medical Director of the Institute and an international leader in the field, transmitted live cases using the latest in high definition television and wireless technology. The physicians performed advanced venous, renal and intestinal vascular procedures, showcasing Holy Name Medical Center's state-of-the-art technology and its leadership role in providing these therapies. Renal artery stenting is a procedure used to treat certain patients with resistant hypertension. The venous procedures focus on treating blood clots in the veins of the legs, a condition that causes persistent leg pain and swelling. They also demonstrated a cutting edge approach for the treatment of pulmonary emboli, a blockage in the pulmonary artery caused by blood clots that travel to the lungs from the legs.

"LINC is the largest vascular meeting in Europe, and we broadcasted cases to over 4000 attendees - a great honor for Holy Name Medical Center, and very exciting," Dr. Rundback said.

Interventional radiology (IR) is a rapidly growing area of medicine. Revolutionary imaging techniques allow specialists to "see" inside the body while guiding narrow tubes (catheters) and other very small instruments through the blood vessels and other pathways to the site of an abnormality. IR enables patients to receive treatment for a variety of medical disorders without surgery.

LINC is committed to advancing the scientific and clinical evaluation and treatment of patients with complex vascular disease through the interdisciplinary discussion of novel endovascular techniques and systematic scientific evaluation. The involvement of leading interventional centers from Europe, North America, Latin America and Japan as live transmission sites, as well as the presence of interventional experts as guest operators in catheterization labs and operating rooms, provides a broad coverage of different interventional approaches and techniques.
