Holy Name Press Releases

Holy Name Medical Center Launches Chinese Medical Program

March 6, 2015

As the Asian population continues to grow in North Jersey, Holy Name Medical Center is launching a Chinese Medical Program (CMP) that will meet the medical needs of this community in a culturally-sensitive environment. The program, under the umbrella of Holy Name's Asian Health Services, will provide health care amenities to make Chinese patients and their families feel welcome and comfortable. Initially, 15 Chinese-American physicians have pledged their support to offer medical services, and more will likely join the program.

A press conference is being held on March 19 at noon in Holy Name Medical Center's Marian Hall to announce the new initiative. A light lunch will be served, followed by a short presentation at 12:30 PM and a question and answer period at 1:00 PM.

The Chinese population in New Jersey increased 34 percent, to more than 135,000 people, between 2000 and 2010, making it the second largest Asian group statewide, after the Asian Indian population. More than 17,300 Chinese people live in Bergen County alone. Holy Name, through the Chinese Medical Program, is making an effort to reach out and provide culturally-sensitive medical services to this population, much like it did to the Korean community when it started the Korean Medical Program (KMP) in 2008.

"Having started the KMP, it was a natural progression to expand our services to the Chinese community," said Kyung Hee Choi, Vice-President of Asian Health Services. "The Korean and Chinese people share many of the same cultural and health beliefs."

In addition to the 15 Chinese-American physicians, the CMP is offering specific services for the Chinese population, including a Chinese-speaking representative who will guide each patient through the Teaneck campus, Chinese dietary items on the hospital menu such as dumplings and congee, and Chinese cable television channels in patients' rooms.

"Through Holy Name's Asian Health Services, the entire staff is ready to provide culturally-sensitive medical services that will make Holy Name the medical home for all Asians," said Michael Maron, CEO and President of Holy Name Medical Center. "What we've been able to do for the Korean community, we will do for all Asians in the region."
