Holy Name Medical Center Expands Gynecologic Cancer Care Team

Surgeon Dr. Maria Schiavone joins Dr. Sharyn Lewin in treating women with cancers of the reproductive system

Gynecologic oncologist, Dr. Maria Schiavone, is now a member of Holy Name Medical Center's Division of Gynecologic Oncology, where she joins Dr. Sharyn Lewin and a multidisplinary team of experts who specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of cancers and conditions affecting the female reproductive system.

"Dr. Schiavone's expertise will enhance how we care for women who are high risk of developing or are living with these types of cancers," said Dr. Adam Jarett, chief medical officer at Holy Name Medical Center. "Together with Dr. Lewin, the pair are leading Holy Name into a new era of gynecologic cancer care. Both physicians received fellowship training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Their high level of expertise, combined with their dedication and passion for helping women, make them a powerful force in the fight against the disease."

Dr. Schiavone specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of cervical, uterine, ovarian, vaginal, and vulva cancers, as well as malignancies of the upper abdomen, pelvis, and colon. She performs minimally invasive and open procedures, and has expertise in advanced chemotherapy techniques, targeted and hormonal therapies, and medications that enhance the effectiveness of chemotherapy.

Dr. Schiavone recently introduced the use of sentinel lymph node mapping to stage cervical, endometrial, and vulvar cancers. This procedure aims to increase precision in the detection of metastatic disease, with the goal of decreasing the risk and complications associated with the removal of all lymph nodes.

Dr. Lewin is board-certified in and gynecologic oncology, recognized nationally and internationally for her expertise in performing minimally invasive and open procedures to treat complex gynecologic cancers and related malignancies of the upper abdomen, pelvis, and colon. In addition to surgical procedures, she also provides the latest chemotherapy techniques, including what is referred to as a warm chemo bath, or hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy [HIPEC]. It is an aggressive treatment that may lengthen life span and improve prognosis for patients with ovarian cancer or a rare peritoneal cancer, which affects the thin layer of tissue that lines the abdomen, uterus, bladder and rectum.
