Endometriosis Center

Overview

Endometriosis is a disorder affecting one in 10 women in the U.S. and typically causes symptoms during reproductive years. It occurs when the tissue that lines the inside of the uterus – the endometrium – grows outside the uterus, most often on the ovaries, fallopian tubes and the tissue lining the pelvis. This abnormally implanted tissue can cause severe pelvic and abdominal pain, and may lead to scarring and infertility. But advances in robotic surgery have made effective treatments possible even in the most complex of cases.

Holy Name Medical Center's Endometriosis Center has a team of specially trained experts in gynecological surgery, led by Yitzhack Asulin, MD, Director of Female Pelvic Reconstruction and Robotic Surgery, who regularly performs the most complex robotic procedures to treat the condition. Treating endometriosis is often challenging, as physicians try to remove diseased tissue while protecting the other organs from damage and preserving fertility.

The team at Holy Name is highly skilled at performing minimally invasive robotic procedures on the most complex endometriosis cases. The robotic approach performed through a few small incisions takes less time than open surgeries, leads to shorter hospital stays, produces less scarring and blood loss and significantly reduces post-operative pain. Dr. Asulin, one of the region's leading robotic surgeons, has completed nearly 1,000 robotic gynecological procedures and can often perform them on an outpatient basis so patients are able to return to work and normal activity much faster than traditional surgeries.
