Overview
Lung cancer is the most common type of cancer and kills about 158,000 men and women in the U.S. each year. Approximately 224,000 new cases are diagnosed annually.
Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, accounting for about 80 percent of cases. Exposure to secondhand smoke, radon, air pollution asbestos and diesel exhaust also raises the risk of developing the disease.
Holy Name Medical Center offers low-dose CT scan lung screenings for eligible individuals who may be at risk for developing lung cancer. Members of the radiology staff offer each patient personalized attention and provide the quick and painless screening in a timely manner. Individuals meet the criteria for the testing if they are:
- Age between 50 and 80 years.
- Current smoker or former smoker who quit within the past 15 years.
- A smoking history of at least 20 pack years or more. Pack years are calculated by multiplying the average number of cigarette packs smoked per day by the number of years you smoked. For example, someone who smoked 2 packs a day for 10 years [2 x 10 = 20] has 20 pack-years of smoking, as does a person who smoked 1 pack a day for 20 years [1 x 20 = 20].)
- Have no signs or symptoms of lung cancer (cough, blood, wheezing, shortness of breath)
Cost
This is a covered benefit under most insurance plans. For those without insurance, Holy Name offers the exam at a compassionate care rate of $200.
