Overview
An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a test used to detect the brain's electrical activity, and helps to diagnose epilepsy, seizure disorders, brain tumors and sleep disorders.
Long-term video EEG monitoring refers to the simultaneous recording of EEG and behavior over extended periods of time. This long-term EEG monitoring is used when it's important to correlate clinical behavior with EEG activity.
How long does it take?
Traditional EEG testing requires admission to the hospital, with an average stay of three to five days. Eligible patients may have this test at home, check with your physician to see if you qualify.
How is an EEG performed?
Your scalp will be measured and marked before electrodes are glued to your head in various areas. You will be monitored for 3-5 days while the electrodes are picking up the electrical activity in the brain. You should try to simulate your normal activities as much as possible, moving freely around your private room. A specially trained doctor will review your monitoring and test results will be discussed with you daily.
Why is this test performed?
Long-term monitoring EEG is used to diagnose episodic events that occur over time. They are not limited to but may include:
- Epileptic seizures
- Fainting or black-out spells
- Periods of confusion
- Hallucinations or behavioral problems
- Confusions
What should you do to prepare for the test?
To prepare for your EEG, please wash your hair and do not use any hair products such as conditioners, sprays or gels. Continue taking your prescribed medications unless your doctor gives you other instructions. Bring a complete list of all your medications and dosages with you.
Hospital gowns will be available but you may also bring a one-week supply of underclothing, button-down shirts, sweat pants and/or shorts. You will not be able to shower or wash your hair while your monitoring is being conducted, but you will be able to sponge bathe daily.
We also encourage you to bring items to help pass the time such as your mobile device, laptop and reading materials. Your room will have TV and internet service.
After the test
The electrodes are removed with a special solution, which dissolves the glue and leaves your hair and skin undamaged. You can wash your hair as soon as the electrodes are removed. A summary of your test results will be sent to your physician.
