Overview
The Holy Name Institute for Wound Healing offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for the treatment of certain non-healing wounds. The Institute's two state-of-the-art hyperbaric chambers allow eligible patients to breathe 100 percent oxygen in a pressurized environment, speeding the healing process.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is non-invasive and painless, and patients are able to watch TV and communicate with their caregiver during treatment sessions.
People with the following conditions may be candidates for hyperbaric oxygen therapy:
- Diabetic ulcers of the lower extremities
- Delayed radiation side effects
- Progressive necrotizing infection/fasciitis
- Compromised skin grafts and flaps
- Crush injury
- Acute traumatic peripheral ischemia
- Acute peripheral arterial insufficiency
- Acute carbon monoxide intoxication
- Cyanide poisoning
- Decompression illness
- Gas embolism
- Gas gangrene
Treating Side Effects of Radiation
Radiation therapy has become an invaluable tool in fighting cancer. However, side effects can appear years or even decades after treatment. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the only known effective treatment for these late effects of radiation, which can include radiation cystitis, radiation enteritis, and radiation induced skin/bone necrosis.
