During the summer heat, staying hydrated is crucial for maintaining good health and overall well-being. While drinking plenty of water is essential, homemade popsicles can be a fun, effective, and delicious way to ensure you and your family stay hydrated.

“Homemade popsicles are a fun and effective way to stay hydrated during extreme heat,” says Debbie Bessen, RD and Nutrition Outreach Manager at Holy Name. “They offer a nutritious, customizable, and enjoyable alternative to plain water, making hydration a more exciting and tasty experience.”

There are many benefits of homemade popsicles:

  • Hydration: Popsicles are primarily made of water, which keeps you hydrated. Adding fruits and vegetables increases their water content, making them even more hydrating. Ingredients like berries, citrus fruits, and cucumbers are excellent choices.
  • Nutrient-Rich: Fresh fruits and vegetables also pack your popsicles with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Some fruits and vegetables also add electrolytes, like potassium and calcium, that help with hydration.
  • Customizable: Homemade popsicles allow you to control the ingredients. You can avoid artificial flavors, colors, and excessive sugar, making them a healthier option than store-bought varieties.
  • Cooling Effect: Eating a cold popsicle helps lower your body temperature, providing immediate relief from the heat.
  • Fun and Engaging: Making popsicles can be a fun activity for the whole family. Kids can get involved in choosing flavors and helping with the preparation.
