Risk Factors for Stroke:

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Heavy alcohol use
  • Physical inactivity or obesity
  • Atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat)
  • Family history of stroke
  • Previous TIA or stroke

Signs of a Stroke: Remember BE-FAST

B Balance – Sudden dizziness or loss of coordination.
E Eyes – Sudden vision problems, blurred or double vision.
F Face drooping – One side of the face droops or is numb? Ask the person to smile and notice if the smile is uneven.
A Arm weakness – Sudden weakness in an arm or leg, often on one side.
S Speech difficulty – Trouble speaking, slurred speech, or difficulty understanding.
T Time to call 9-1-1. Act immediately if you see any of these signs.
