Sleeve Gastrectomy
Sleeve Gastrectomy or Gastric Sleeve is the most performed type of
bariatric surgery in the United States. The procedure removes 80 percent of the
stomach, leaving a narrow "sleeve-like" section about the size and shape of a small
banana. It is a safe and effective procedure with little risk of complications.
The "new" small stomach holds about 4-5 ounces of food at one time.
This reduces food consumption, which results in weight loss. The digestion and
absorption of food and nutrients is not affected. Most patients see 20-25% weight
loss after surgery.
The surgery is performed with a one-night stay in the hospital,
with most patients returning home the following day. Most patients can sit up soon
after surgery with little to no discomfort.
This procedure is popular because it results in less hunger for the
patient. This enables better food choices, stabilizes metabolism and promotes a
healthier lifestyle.
This procedure is not reversible.
