Hospice Volunteer Program

At Villa Marie Claire, our Hospice Volunteer Program is comprised of more than 60 volunteers, ranging from current professionals, retirees and students who feel called to provide end-of-life care. Hospice volunteers offer support to patients, families and on-site staff, fulfilling numerous roles on a daily basis. These roles may include:

Administrative Services

  • Reception Desk: Meet and greet families and visitors; answer the phone.

  • Clerical: Assist staff members with clerical work, such as organizing and filing documents.

  • Organizational: Organize books and CDs in the library, create flower arrangements, decorate for the holidays etc.


Patient & Family Services

  • Individual Visits: Room visits may include conversation and reminiscence, reading aloud, listening to or playing music, spiritual support and anything else that may support patients and their families.

  • Pet Therapy: Certified pet therapy dogs and their specially trained owners visit patients and families throughout the Villa campus.

  • Massage Therapy: Licensed Massage Therapists provide comfort and support through soothing massage and therapeutic touch.

  • Yoga & Reiki: Certified Yoga Instructors provide group yoga classes for families and staff, as well as bedside yoga. Reiki Practitioners offer bedside Reiki Therapy on an individual basis.

  • Activity Programs: Administer specific group programs for families, children, and /or patients such as live music, open art, gardening etc.

  • Creative Arts Therapy: Licensed in either music therapy, dance/movement therapy, or art therapy, highly-trained professionals create a healing and supportive space, meeting the psychosocial and emotional needs of the patient and family through the creative arts.


Community Hospice Services

Hospice volunteers also have the opportunity to provide patient and family services in a patient's home, nursing home or assisted living facility.

Bereavement Services

Assist our Bereavement Coordinator in working with families that are coping with the loss of a loved one. This may entail administrative tasks, such as making phone calls or writing cards, or assisting in bereavement support groups or workshops.
