What's the Difference Between a Laborist, Midwife, and Doula?
-
A laborist is an obstetrician dedicated exclusively to providing onsite support
24/7 for expectant mothers. A laborist doesn't replace your OB, but works and collaborates
closely with
your OB to ensure a smooth and safe birth experience in the event of an emergency, or if your
doctor is unavailable at the time of your arrival. A laborist can manage deliveries and respond
to emergencies, and step in to provide immediate care at all times, ensuring you and your baby
remain in expert hands every step of the way.
-
A midwife is a certified healthcare professional who specializes in prenatal
care, childbirth,
and postpartum care. A midwife is focused on providing holistic, personalized support to
expectant moms, typically in lower-risk pregnancies.
-
A doula is a non-medical birth coach, selected and brought in by mom. Doulas can play a crucial
role during pregnancy and childbirth, offering additional information, education, and a range of
emotional, physical, and spiritual support services. From massages to breathing techniques and
positioning suggestions, this can help make the labor process more comfortable.
