Overview

A bone density test is taken to diagnose osteoporosis, a disease that weakens bones and makes them more likely to break. The screening consists of a simple X-ray that measures how many grams of calcium and other bone minerals are found within a segment of bone. A higher mineral count indicates denser or stronger bones. The bones typically tested are in the spine, hip and forearm.

A bone density test is quick and painless and involves just a low-dose X-ray of the bone. No preparation is necessary.

Results are mailed to your physician.
